Yom Kippur

"For on this day atonement shall be made for you, to purify you; you shall be cleansed from all your sins before the Eternal God"

Leviticus 16 verse 30, and from the Kol Nidrei Service (Erev Yom Kippur).

Yom Kippur occurs on the tenth of Tishri and ends the Ten Days of Repentance that started on Rosh Hashanah. It is a day for introspection and reflection, a day to examine oneself, to confess and to atone.

Yom Kippur gives us the chance to change our conduct, to put things right in our lives. We must acknowledge that we have sinned, we have transgressed, personally and communally, by omission and commission.

The Day starts in the evening with the haunting theme of Kol Nidrei ('All the vows'), and concludes in the Ne-ilah with one long triumphant blast of the Shofar. During the day we move towards reconciliation with the Eternal One and with each other. It is also a time to think of those whom we have lost, particularly over the past year, but also those of prior years at the Memorial service, which we hold just prior to Ne-ilah.

On Yom Kippur it is forbidden to eat and drink, a day when we are commanded to afflict our souls. Those whose health is endangered or children below Bar or Batmitzvah age are exempted from fasting.

It is also traditional to make an appeal to the community to make charitable donations, tzedakah. In traditional communities this has been to the JIA, but progressive communities tend to consider local Jewish and non-Jewish good causes, as well as an Israeli charity. In the afternoon we hold a Yom Kippur family service to demonstrate that you can learn, think seriously about yourself and have a little fun in the process on Yom Kippur!

Immediately after Havdalah, it is customary to make a symbolic start to the Sukkah ready for the start of the next festival, Sukkoth
