"On the day of the first fruits, your Feast of Weeks, when you bring an offering of new grain to the Eternal One, you shall observe a holy day"
Numbers 28:26

Erev Shavuot at HWPS will be marked with a token Tikkun to which all are invited to stay after the service. A variety of delicious cheesecakes will be served.

Shavuot occurs on the 6th of Sivan. Shavuot means "weeks" and derives from its celebration seven weeks after Pesach.

In the Talmud, Shavuot is also identified with the events at Sinai, particularly the giving by God to Moses of the Ten Commandments. Thus on Shavuot the Jewish people celebrate and reaffirm their covenantal relationship with God. The Ten Commandments are read at services and the Torah is studied late into the night (The "Tikkun").

The Book of Ruth is read on Shavuot. The story takes place during the barley harvest and Ruth's willing conversion to Judaism parallels the Jewish people's acceptance of Torah.

It is customary to eat dairy dishes on Shavuot. The sweetness and physical nourishment of such food is compared to the similar qualities of the words of Torah.
