"Rejoice and be glad on Simchat Torah, and give honour to the Torah"

Siddur Lev Chadash -- Reading of the Torah for Simchat Torah

Simchat Torah or Shemini Atzeret is the festival of Torah, honouring the completion and beginning of the Torah-reading cycle. It occurs one week after Sukkot. It is customary to go on a procession seven times round the Synagogue, with children waving flags with apples on top, and some adults carrying Torahs (and 1 or 2 children carrying baby scrolls). It is also customary for the Synagogue to honour two of its senior members, one as the Chatan Torah, who reads about the death of Moses in the last section of Deuteronomy and one as Chatan Bereshit, who reads the creation story in the first sidra of Genesis. In a couple of months time it will be Chanukah, festival of light.
