"In
the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall
observe complete rest, a holy day commemorated with loud blasts."
"Blow the Shofar at the new moon and when the moon is full, for our festival. It is a statute for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob.". The Jewish New Year. The beginning of ten days of rigorous self examination. The sound of the Shofar, a call to the Eternal One, a time to examine our hearts and to plead for forgiveness. Rosh Hashanah is also the start of the 10 Days of Penitence which culminates in Yom Kippur. It is a Day of Judgement, a time to make amends for the past and begin the year with a clean slate. In spite of our weaknesses the gates of repentance are always open. Apples and Honey - It is customary to dip a piece of apple in honey and eat it, symbolising the hope for a good and sweet year.
