Photo 39The Photo Group meets once a month, normally on a Tuesday or Wednesday at the Synagogue at 8.00pm. We share different aspects of photography. Our interest vary from taking photos, collecting old cameras, learning about well known photographers and their impact on the wider world. At the end of the formal programme we share any recent work we have, from holiday snaps to digital images or darkroom work. We also discuss exhibitions and support each other, and swap hints for improving our photos. the overall atmosphere is one of enthusiasm and mutual support. We commence at 8.00pm for 8.15pm and all are welcome from beginners to pros! Details of dates of meetings are included on the Synagogue Diary. Contact Pat Zatz via the Synagogue office for more details.
In association with Middlesex New Synagogue Film 39 presents a monthly programme of film evenings at 39 Bessborough Road featuring films of Jewish interest. Each presentation generally includes sub-titles for people with impaired hearing, and is followed by a short discussion on the film. Light refreshments are provided; a donation to a Synagogue charity would be appreciated. Screenings start at 8:00pm, and are followed by a short discussion. On 23rd April we will be showing 'Imaginary Witness'. For over a half a century Hollywood films have dealt with Nazism and the Holocaust in complex and often contradictory ways, marked by outrage and indifference, compassion and ignorance, the need to understand and the desire to forget. While this most horrific chapter in modern world history happened far from America’s shores, it has been American movies, perhaps more than any other medium, that have shaped how we understand and remember these events.Made in 2004, this superb documentary takes a fascinating look at how Hollywood, chose first to sidestep the Holocaust completely and then slowly accept its responsibility to inform and educate. Its growing confidence can be seen in films such as The Diary of Anne Frank, Schindler’s List, Sarah’s Key and even in TV series such as, Sobibor and Band of Brothers Contact Tony Fineberg or e-mail admin@mns.org.uk for further information about Film 39 and future presentations. Book 39The Book Group meets bi-monthly. Our next meeting is on 10th April 2013 when we will be discussing 'People of the Book', by Geraldine Brooks. Contact Janet Solomon via the Synagogue office for more details. All welcome!
