Marrakech Trip April 2015 ............Explore the Jewish Heritage and Cultural Diversity of Marrakech from 16th to 20th April 2015
This journey to North Africa offers a unique opportunity for a small group to explore sites of significant Jewish history and Berber culture. Marrakech is relatively close to London, yet culturally and geographically utterly different. For a full itinerary and brochure click HERE
.
The estimated cost of this trip is £360.00  (double accommodation) with a single supplement of £60.  This fee includes: all overnight accommodation and all breakfasts at the charming Riad Dar Nimbus, entrance fees and guides; local transfers;  mini-bus travel; and a group tip to the hotel staff. The flight costs are not included and tickets will need to be booked directly with British Airways and full on-line booking instructions will be given.  Not included are lunches, dinners and snacks but meal expenses are generally lower than in London. A deposit of £180.00 per person should be sent in with the booking form, which is attached with the brochure, and the deadline for all remaining payments is 15th March 2014. Once the 16 places are filled a waiting list will be started. Please contact the trip leader, Rabbi Frank Dabba Smith at frank_dabbasmith@hotmail.com if you have any questions.

BIRTHDAY AND BABY BLESSINGS! .......Below are those members who celebrated their birthdays in October, together with the beautiful Eva Mae Brown (just 13 days old) and her proud parents, Jo and James, standing in front of the Ark after our Shabbat service on 25th October. At the service our Rabbi blessed both those who had celebrated their birthdays in October, and little Eva Mae.

News and Latest Events!

Simchat Torah 2014 - Mazel tov to our Chatanim. Chatan Torah Hana Schlesinger and Chatan Bereishit Stella Bennister celebrate below, surrounded by HWPS members and friends at our Simchat Torah Kiddush.

Sukkot 2014 - Sunday 5th and 12th October and HaMakom decorates and stands in the Mosaic Sukkah! A great start to the new academic year! HaMakom reflects the coming together of 4 communities to educate children and young adults in Progressive Judaism. As a pluralistic school, we fully respect and honour the Liberal, Reform and Masorti approaches and values with respect to Jewish practice and status/descent. If you are interested in your child joining HaMakom please contact the Synagogue Office on 020-8864-5323.

YOM KIPPUR 2014 and the APPEAL - At the close of Yom Kippur on Saturday, 4th October 2014, we enjoyed a very special ritual. HWPS stalwarts Rita Asbury and Alan Solomon celebrated birthdays over the weekend and were joined by youthful members of all ages. From left to right: Inge Harwood, Joy Katz, Feo Kahn (104 and 3/4 and going strong!), Feo's carer Angie, Alan Solomon, Rita Asbury and Adam Prince.

As part of our Yom Kippur morning service Adrian Cohen, Chairman of HWPS, delivered the Appeal. Our 5 main charities are MIND, Friends of the Earth Middle EastAJEX, Sarcoma UK and Hatikva (the Progressive Congregations of Ukraine). Please show your generosity and fulfil the mitzvah of Tzedakah and so help our main charities, plus a little which will be held back for other worthy charities through the year. Many thanks in advance to everyone who donates. Every donation, large or small, is much appreciated. For copies of this and previous Appeals click HERE. For a Gift Aid form to increase the value of your donation, if you are a tax payer, click HERE. It is not too late to give. Please send donations to the Synagogue Office.

Kiev Koppers.......Kiev Koppers........Kiev Koppers
Bring your loose change to Shul and support our sister community in Kiev, Ukraine. Rabbi Alex Duchovny, previously an assistant Rabbi of HWPS and now the full time rabbi for the Kiev community will be extremely grateful for every penny we can give to help this young community. There is a jar at the back of the sanctuary for donations.  Stop press......Over £15,000 raised to date!!!

Kabbalat Torah!............On 28th June Elana Solomon, Bea Bennister and Kathy Brown (pictured below) led the Kabbalat Torah Shabbat service. As well as taking the service, they each recounted their different experiences and reflections, following their trip last year to Berlin. It was a wonderful service. Mazel Tov to all 3 girls and their family and friends

Mosaic Jewish Heritage Trip to Denmark.......Pictured below are the participants in a successful trip led by our Rabbi, which took place from 19th to 22nd June. Participants included Cathy Smith, Steve and Phillipa Friedman, Alan Breslaw, Hana Schlesinger, Gillian and Michale Reik, Evelyn Friedlander, Lindsey and Adrian Cohen, Jacqueline Gross and David Wyman.

The group photograph was made in Gilleleje Harbour by the monument commemorating the rescue of nearly 2,000 Danish Jews who were transported from here by sea to Sweden during the Shoah. Out of a total population of nearly 8,000 Jews in Denmark, all but about 500 were sent to safety in Sweden and only 500 were deported to Terezin (of whom 350 survived). In the photo is Else from the Gilleleje Museum (3rd from left) and Tove (at far right) who was hidden as a small child by altruistic citizens of Gilleleje. Tove and Else shared with us the history of these unparalleled events. The group also enjoyed with them a wonderful fish meal and took 4 kilos of superb smoked fish back to Copenhagen for Erev Shabbat with the progressive community, Shir Hatzafon.

Yom HaShoah at Mosaic and HaMakom
.
......A number of guest speakers addressed HaMakom on 27th April about their Holocaust experiences. These included our own member, Feo Kahn (pictured below with Joy Katz and Rachel Rosewicz and other HaMakom teachers and pupils), a refugee from Trier, Germany. The next evening a special service and study session entitled, '"Submariners": Berlin's Hidden Jews' was held in the Synagogue.

Successful Communal Seder.......On Tuesday 15th April over 100 HWPS and MNS members joined together to celebrate Pesach. Everyone who attended enjoyed the event led by our 2 Rabbis, including the Afikoman winners pictured below! We recalled our shared history, ate wonderful food and enjoyed friendly company. Thanks to Hana Schlesinger and all those involved in its organisation in making the Communal Seder such a success.

WE ARE 'MOSAIC'! ............A unique moment occurred for our three synagogue communities, and also for Anglo-Jewry on Sunday 2nd March.  Over 200 members of HWPS, MNS and HEMS endorsed our New Community, chose the name of 'MOSAIC', and elected the officers of the New Community.

The name Mosaic speaks to our vision for our New Community in a number of ways:

 Mosaic as a whole comprises many differing pieces where each part enhances and brings out qualities in the others to create something entirely new;
Mosaic as literally “from Moses”; and
Mosaic as an ethos for our community – emphasising the depth and qualities each individual adds to our entire picture.

We are excited to reach this milestone and for the opportunities we have, as the UK’s first pluralist Jewish community, to enrich and refresh our communities. The New Community entity has been formed and our application has now received Charity Commission approval.

PURIM Celebrations at HaMakom 2014!....all members of the community were invited for a Megillah reading/acting. It finished with Hamantaschen! Children and teachers came in fancy dress. Some are shown below! There was a collection for Sports Relief & WJR’s Ukraine Crisis Fund.

PURIM Celebrations at Mosaic 2014!.......On Saturday 15th March our new community, Mosaic, took another historic step with 3 simultaneous erev Purim services being held  at Bessborough Road. There were separate Liberal, Reform and Masorti services, following which we joined together for refreshments (including the hamentaschen made by our Mosaic cooks) and a fancy dress competition. Those taking part are pictured below! There were prizes for the most stylish outfit, the most original outfit, the best Purim outfit and, for those not in fancy dress, the most subtle outfit! Members were able to choose whether to hear the Megillah read in Hebrew or English. Donations were also made to the Harrow Food Bank.

'RED SHABBAT! - On Friday 7th February nearly 100 people (pictured below) enjoyed an evening of fun, starting at 7:00pm with a short Shabbat service and followed by supper, when our New Community 'ramped up the red' in support of the British Heart Foundation. There are more New Community ('NC') events on the way, as well as the first General Meeting of the NC on March 2nd, when we will agree the name of NC and formalise its official launch.

MAZAL TOV  FEO! - Our member Feo Kahn celebrates her 104th birthday together with HWPS friends, including fellow refugee Inge Harwood (at right, aged 92). Feo was born in Trier, Germany and managed to come to the UK with her parents and two sisters, Hilda and Ruth. Her son Stephen divides his time between Kent and the Hague while daughter Annette lives in New York City. Both are in constant contact and visit frequently. During one HWPS Jewish heritage journey to Germany, Rabbi Frank took Feo and her sister Ruth to the house along the Mosel River where they were born. We will never forget Feo and Ruth showing the group where kind neighbours protected their father during Kristallnacht in November 1938. We wish Feo continued good health and that she fully maintains her sharp ability to correct Rabbi Frank's German grammar!

SCRIBE VISITS HAMAKOM! ...The  photos below are concerned with the visit of a Sofer (scribe) named Mordechai Pinchas (Marc Michaels) to our multi community Cheder, HaMakom, on Sunday, 8th December. His mentor was Vivian Solomon who was a member of Southgate Reform Synagogue and his website is www.sofer.co.uk. His talk and demonstration was very engaging and, as you can see, the kids had a go at learning how to form letters.

FABULOUS CHANUKAH CELEBRATIONS......... On Friday 29th November HWPS and MNS hosted a Young People's Party, including entertainment and tea. This was followed by a Candle Lighting service. Then we celebrated Erev Shabbat and Chanukah together. People brought their own Chanukiah! This was followed by a Chavurah supper, including a Quiz, Singing and Doughnut Feasting! An enjoyable evening for all who came.

HWPS, RIVER JORDAN, WATER and MIDDLE EAST PEACE - Rabbi Frank, EcoPeace-FoEME directors Gidon Bromberg (Israel), Munqeth Mehyar (Jordan) and Nader Khatib (Palestine), together with Shahab Hussein (Secretary General of the Wembley Central Mosque) saw fellow faith leaders sign a declaration regarding the rehabilitation of the Jordan River. Frank and Shahab are both inaugural members of FoEME's International Advisory Committee and participated in the conference held in Jordan at the Dead Sea 10-12 November 2013. Rabbi Frank then went on to Herzliya in Israel for a subsequent conference from 13-14 November regarding FoEME's 'Good Water Neighbours Project'. This conference brought together diplomats, hydrologists and activists from Israel, Jordan, Palestine and abroad to reflect on how co-operating over common water concerns can advance the peace process. Here, Lord John Alderdice spoke about his central role in the northern Irish peace process and how the work began many years ago with a pragmatic agreement concerning fishing rights and conservation on the River Foyle. On Saturday morning 16th November, Rabbi Frank welcomed Lord and Lady Alderdice to our Shabbat services.

HWPS remembered at Kiev inauguration - At the Dedication event for the new Progressive Centre in Kiev Rabbi Alex Dukhovny, former HWPS assistant Rabbi, thanked the members of Harrow & Wembley for all the help we have given the Kiev community over the years. They unveiled a special plaque in the new building which includes our name. Here it is (we are bottom right!).

Pictured below, are Our Honoured Chatanim, Harry Benham (Torah) and Kevin Ziants (Bereshit), with their respective partners Tracey and Olivia. At our Simchat Torah services held on the 25th and 26th September 2013 Harry read the end of the Book of Deuteronomy and Kevin started the Book of Genesis. The scrolls were paraded, there was dancing and joy...and a number of sweets thrown! A memorable and enjoyable 2 days for Harry, Kevin and the whole congregation.

COME IN TO OUR LIBRARY! ..........Next time you come to Synagogue at Bessborough Road why not pop in to our library and take a look? Better still, it is open every day and provides a quiet haven of relaxation in a light, airy room. The Library, which adjoins our sanctuary, has been completely redecorated and refitted, and now houses an impressive selection of books on all Jewish topics. We also have an excellent selection of children's books. You will find many books not widely available so come on in and have a read!

FIRST SERVICES HELD AT BESSBOROUGH ROAD ..........Our first Shabbat services were held at our new home on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th June 2011. The atmosphere was very warm and friendly, with the strong and willing participation of all congregants. It was a wonderful start to this new era in the history of HWPS.

IN JUNE 2011 WE MOVED!.......FROM 326 TO 39!.......In June 2011 HWPS sold its old building at 326 Preston Road and moved (on foot and by bus!) to its new dedicated sanctuary and offices at 39 Bessborough Road, Harrow. Pictures of the move are shown below.

Pictured above are highlights of the move on 12th June 2011, from the deconsecration of Preston Road and the removal of the mezzuzah, the parade of the scrolls to the waiting Routemaster bus, the Chuppah style reception at Bessborough Road, and taking the scrolls upstairs to our new sanctuary, after which the mezzuzah was banged into place on the door of our new home.

A farewell service and Kiddush at Preston Road, pictured below,  was held on Saturday 11th June 2011, attended by over 200 people. Our scrolls were transported on 12th June to their new home. A consecration service at Bessborough Road was then held, also attended by over 200, including the Mayor of Harrow.

A farewell dinner took place at 326 Preston Road that evening, at which Rosita Rosenberg, former Executive Director of Liberal Judaism and HWPS member, was the excellent guest speaker. It was also attended by 7 Rabbis, pictured below, including Rabbi Danny Rich, Chief Executive of Liberal Judaism.

2004 Synagogue Dedication Service .....On 5th September 2004 we moved from our original building at Preston Road to our new building there. For images of how that building evolved click here!

2004 Synagogue Farewell Service....On 24th July 2004 the Synagogue bade farewell to its original building. The pictures below capture the final service and kiddush. This building is no more and a sheltered housing development was constructed there, in which some of our members reside.
