Yes - Its' time once again to get your brains into gear and join us for what is
always an enjoyable and social occasion. Tickets are just £17 and you can make
up a whole table of 10 or join others on the day. The quiz will not be too
taxing and you will enjoy an excellent meal so please come along and support us!

'OUTREACH' - We welcome
mixed faith couples and families to our
community. The Rabbi also conducts acts of
prayer at weddings for mixed faith couples, according to the
guidelines of the Liberal Judaism Rabbinic

prayer.

THE FUTURE OF HWPS - Over
150 members attended a special meeting on Sunday 8th November to discuss the future options
for the Synagogue. After an introduction by our Chairman, Adrian Cohen,
and contributions from Rabbi Frank and our Treasurer, Steven Sanderson, many
wide-ranging comments were made, and questions asked by the audience. Those who
spoke covered the whole range of ages and activities of HWPS. At the end,
although views differed, a show of hands indicated support for Council in moving
matters forward. Thanks to all who attended and contributed. All views have been
recorded and will be taken on board in our next phase of meetings and
discussions.
OUR HONOURED CHATANIM FOR SIMCHAT
TORAH.....Mazel Tov to Mary Vulkan (Chatan Torah) and Cathy Smith (Chatan
Bereshit). At our Simchat Torah
services on the 9th and 10th October 2009 Mary and Cathy read the end of the
Book of Deuteronomy and the start of the Book of Genesis. (Soft!) sweets were
thrown! Children brought their flags! The scrolls were paraded and there was
also Israeli dancing!
YOM KIPPUR APPEAL - On Monday 28th September 2009, as part of our Yom Kippur morning service, Adrian Cohen, Chairman of HWPS, delivered the Appeal. This year our 3 main charities are Shalva (and Israeli charity which provides a therapeutic and supportive environment to advance children with special needs whilst enabling the family to stay together and live a normal life), Headway North West London (supporting people affected by brain injury), and the Progressive Congregations of Ukraine. Please be generous, even in these difficult economic times, so we can give good support to these 3 selected and most worthwhile main charities, with a little held back for other worthy charities through the year. ADULT EDUCATION...Our
programme of Adult Education will resume on October 18th 2009 at 10.30am. Classes will be
held on Sunday mornings. Details to follow, but keep those Sunday mornings free!
KABBALAT TORAH
GRADUATION!......On
the 5th July 2009, following their visit to Berlin in April, Hannah and Miriam
Sanderson, Sam Rosewicz and Lewis Smith led the service and addressed the packed
congregation. They are pictured below with Rabbi Frank preparing for what was a
wonderful service. Afterwards, our new Chairman, Adrian Cohen, presented
each of them with a High Holy Days Machzor.
SHABBAT FAMILY SERVICE......On the 13th June 2009, the Cheder children led a memorable morning service. The congregation who attended felt privileged to be there and were impressed by the high standards of reading in both Hebrew and English. Many thanks to Abbie, Alexandra, Sam, Sarah, Alexander, Rachel, Noah and Tommy.
COMMUNAL SEDER ENJOYED BY OVER 100....On April 9th we held our Pesach Communal Seder. We were delighted this year that Rabbi Janet Burden of Ealing Liberal Synagogue jointly conducted the service with our Rabbi, Frank Dabba Smith, and that a number of Ealing members joined us for this occasion, when we remembered our ancestors, treasured our own freedom and re-called the lack of such liberty endured by many others in the world around us.
??? SUPPER QUIZ ???...........On March 15th
HWPS held its annual Supper Quiz. This was, as always a very enjoyable evening with
delicious food and good company. Alan Hunt fired the questions and got those
little grey cells working! After 10 rounds and a marathon it was the Leon table
that came up trumps! Thanks to all who helped make the evening such a success.
GROUP 326 SHOW A SELL OUT TRIUMPH!.......A special tribute show in memory of their late
Chairman, David Freedman, was held on Saturday 31st January and Sunday 1st
February to packed houses. Everyone there enjoyed the singing, the food and the
good company. Well done to all involved.
BAZAAR A GRAND
SUCCESS!.....On Sunday 30th November 2008 HWPS's doors once again opened to customers
for toys, gifts, bric-a-brac, books, refreshments and
much much more! It was a great day, raising nearly £2,000 for HWPS. Thanks to
all those involved in the organisation.
RACE NIGHT!
- On Saturday 25th October 2008 we enjoyed 6 races (actually 6 and a half due to a
broken projector!) as well as some refreshments, as the gee gees hit HWPS. As
well as the profits from the punters on the night (the bookies always win!), all
the races and horse were sponsored by organisations and individuals, raising
important funds for the Synagogue. Thanks to all those donors and to Michelle
Latchman and the Fund Raising Committee for organising the evening.
News....News.....Would you like to make a donation or legacy to the future of the Synagogue? Please send a cheque to the Synagogue office. Gift Aid forms are also available from the office, which can increase the value of your donations by 28p for every £ you give. As HWPS is a registered charity, a legacy is exempt from Inheritance Tax and will be deducted from your estate before IHT is calculated. On 24th July 2004 the Synagogue bade farewell to its old building. The pictures below capture the final service and kiddush. Now the old building is no more and a new sheltered housing development has been constructed.
